Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20) 🥩
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg 🥚
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder 🧄
- ½ tsp onion powder 🧅
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp oil (for frying)
For the Country Gravy:
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter 🧈
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 ½ cups whole milk 🥛
- ½ cup beef broth 🍲
- ½ tsp garlic powder 🧄
- ½ tsp onion powder 🧅
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
Instructions
1️⃣ Mix ingredients: In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined (do not overwork).
2️⃣ Form patties: Shape into 4-6 equal-sized patties, about ½-inch thick.
3️⃣ Sear the steaks: Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet). Remove and set aside.
4️⃣ Melt butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute until golden (this forms a roux).
5️⃣ Slowly whisk in milk & broth, stirring continuously until smooth.
6️⃣ Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes until thickened.
7️⃣ Return hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon gravy over them, and simmer for 5-7 minutes until the patties are fully cooked (internal temp 160°F/71°C).
8️⃣ Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or biscuits! 😋
Notes
- Make it extra creamy: Add a splash of heavy cream to the gravy for a richer texture.
- For more flavor: Sauté onions and mushrooms in the skillet before adding the gravy.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet or microwave.
